FIRST ASOS FOUNDATION CHARITY GOLF DAY RAISES OVER 70K

Last week the ASOS Foundation held their first Charity Golf Day at the Grove in Hertfordshire.

Over a hundred of our suppliers took part in the tournament along with two ASOS teams featuring a couple of rugby players. Extra features included a Beat the Pro competition and the opportunity to win a car and a holiday for getting a Hole in One. After the game, the golfers headed back to the Clubhouse for lunch and a fundraising auction.

In spite of some rain and an early start it was a great success raising over 70k for the ASOS Foundation and means we’re well on the way to completing our first ASOS Foundation-Udayan family home in Delhi, India.  This will house 12 orphaned
girls providing them with a safe family environment and access to a good education.

With glowsticks and face paints at the ready Seven ASOSers raved their way around the 5km course which featured different multi-coloured lands (think huge inflatable trees, rainbows, jelly babies and cupcakes). There was no shortage of neon lights, lasers or dancing at the celebration stage at the end of the night. In April the ASOS Foundation delivered its Get Started with Customer Service programme in Hemel, in partnership with the Prince’s Trust. Get Started programmes are short courses designed to help young people leaving care, young offenders and the long term unemployed develop new skills, build confidence and have fun, helping them to move forwards in their lives and take that first step towards getting on their feet.

During the week, ten young people from the Hemel Hempstead area got an insight into all things Customer Care and were able to learn about customer service, social media, behavioural types, the ASOS customer and profit protection. On top of this, they also received a tailored CV and an interview skills and work-wear styling session.

We finished the week with a celebration where the participants got to share about their experience and achievements during the week – a great success.

GET STARTED WITH FASHION IN LONDON

In March 2015 the ASOS Foundation ran our Get Started with Fashion programme at GLH in partnership with the Prince’s Trust. These programmes have been running since 2010 and have been a big success over the years. The Get Started short courses are designed to help young people leaving care, educational underachievers and the long- term unemployed develop new skills, build confidence and have fun, helping them to move forward in their lives and take that first step towards building a career.

15 young people from the London area attended the week long programme at GLH with experts from around the business giving them an insight into the fashion business while exploring job opportunities with them. During the week, the group visited some charity shops along the High Street and selected items that they then brought back to GLH and upcycled. Staff from across the business helped us run sessions on Marketplace, Magazine, Design, Styling, Buying, Studio and CV writing. The group also had a chance to visit Fashion Enter in Haringey to learn more about the way a factory works and the lifecycle of a garment.

The week was a great success and ended with a celebration event on the Friday where the delegates presented back on each session that was run throughout the week and also shared their overall experience.

The first Get Into IT: Service Desk @ ASOS in partnership with the Prince’s Trust was a huge success with 11 young people completing the programme.

Their time on the programme included computer hardware, server infrastructure and LinkedIn sessions. The group also took part in a Tech Fair “speed dating” afternoon where they all had the opportunity to meet lots of ASOSers from a variety of Tech roles and had a session with our CEO. The People Team ran CV Writing, Job Search and Interview sessions to prepare the group for their mock interview at the end of the programme. The programme finished with a visit to the Silicon Roundabout to find out about technology companies based in London and to get an idea of how important technology is.

At the end of Get Into Service Desk three of the delegates joined ASOS in the Tech team!

PALACE TO PALACE RIDE

Each year ASOSers take part in Palace to Palace and this year was no exception. Early in the morning of Sunday 15th October, with the nip of Autumn in the air, the ASOS team set off from Buckingham Palace to embark on the 45 mile bike ride to Windsor Castle. With over 4,000 people taking part in the event (all wearing matching yellow jerseys) there was no risk of feeling left behind. Parts of the route were stunning…Richmond Park and Chobham Common were a few highlights. Even the ‘hilly’ section a few miles from the finish did not phase- at this point the thought of lunch was enough of an incentive to keep pedalling (the non-alcoholic beer provided at the finish line was a bittersweet reward)!

Palace to Palace is hosted by the Prince’s Trust-a partner charity to the ASOS Foundation. The funds raised from the event allow the Prince’s Trust to continue their work helping disadvantaged young people all over the UK into work, training or education. Thanks go to the team and anyone who supported them with fundraising.

GET STARTED WITH CUSTOMER CARE IN HEMEL HEMPSTEAD

Together with the Prince’s Trust, we ran the programme in our vibrant and busy 24/7 Hemel office and it was a great week – both for the young people attending as well as for the ASOSers helping to run it.

They learnt about customer service, social media, behavioural types and profit protection. They also received a tailored CV, interview skills and work-wear styling session – we really tried to kit them out for the working world out there. Cherry on top? The celebration at the end of the week included having two attendees from last year’s programme return to talk about the progress they’ve made since going on the course… as they’re now permanent ASOSers!

THE RUN TO THE BEAT TEAM RAISE OVER £6k

For the last few months 24 ASOSers have been training and fundraising hard for Run to the Beat – a 10K run through Wembley Park. All their hard work paid off on Sunday 16th September when, despite a few really tricky hills, everyone made it over the finish line (with some very respectable times!). Thankfully the route was packed with live DJs, giving all the runners a much needed boost and creating a festival atmosphere. Everyone involved had a great time and felt a big sense of achievement whilst receiving their medals – for some of the ASOSers this was the first time they had taken part in an organised race event.

So far the team have raised a staggering £6467.48 for the ASOS Foundation – a much needed lift toward the target of raising 150K by April 2015 so we can build another home for Udayan Care. Thanks go to team for all their hard work and also to all of you who have helped them smash their fundraising targets.

14 young people from the London area attended the week long programme at GLH getting a behind the scenes look at the fashion industry from all things ASOS HQ right through to garment manufacture. The young people visited the charity shops along the high street and selected an item each that they then brought back to GLH and upcycled.

During the week various ASOS’ers popped in to run sessions on magazine, Marketplace, design, CV, interview tips and styling. There was even a trip The Factory in Harringay to learn about more about the life cycle of a garment, elements of design, pattern cutting and manufacture.

The week was a great success and ended with a celebration event on the Friday where all the young people talked about their up-cycled garments and shared their overall experience. They also had the opportunity to meet colleagues from around the business.

100k

The Big Challenge was launched to help the ASOS Foundation raise 150K by April 2015 to fund a home for abandoned children in India.

There are 31 million orphaned and abandoned children in India. Udayan Care works hard to take these children off the streets and bring them up in family style homes. The ASOS Foundation has funded two homes since 2009, and is now fundraising to build another home.

Since March 2014 the ASOS staff have been doing some amazing fundraising and we have made over £100k from bake sales, scary movie night, staff sample sales and challenge events including Run to the Beat and Fright Hike.

Please click if you are interested in getting involved in supporting the ASOS Foundation.
